Why and How to Pray for Missionaries

Missionaries need their brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for them. There are many reasons—some of which are listed below. Full time missionaries must have intercessory missionaries working with them on a regular systematic basis. They cannot work independently in the salvation, discipling, and training of others. The most important thing we can do in their behalf is uphold them faithfully before God’s throne of grace!

Missionaries face loneliness

Loneliness is one of the means our enemy uses to discourage and depress our missionaries. Many of them are surrounded by people of other cultures and languages and therefore the feeling of loneliness is emphasized!  PRAY!!

Missionaries face many frustrations

There is much to discourage and frustrate our missionaries:

  • Language disparity
  • Different cultures and languages
  • Climate
  • Unfamiliar foods
  • Lack of results
Missionaries go to the field wishing to set the world on fire for the Lord. There must be constant looking to Jesus as it is difficult when circumstances do not measure up to their expectations.   PRAY!!

Missionaries have need of self-knowledge

Like all of us it isn’t long before we are forced to face up to a sinful nature. It is difficult to realize this especially when you are a missionary under new pressures of the mission field. Missionaries have mentioned that some of the new revelations brought to their attention by the Lord are:

  • Pride of race
  • Prejudice
  • Lack of self discipline
It is important that missionaries have measurable goals for the work and sufficiently detailed programs for accomplishing them.  PRAY!!

Missionaries are invading enemy territory

In most cases Satan has held uncontested sway in an area for years. Therefore many people have twisted thinking, and so God’s Truths do not penetrate easily. PRAY for our missionaries that they will not become discouraged in seeking to present the Gospel.

Missionaries do a lot of traveling

Traveling on the field is often hazardous. PRAY!!

Missionaries need stability

There must be doctrinal stability through the study of the Word in order to maintain equilibrium. Mentally, one must learn how to overcome and combat Satan’s tool of depression through being in God’s Word continually.  PRAY that our missionaries develop mature stability and get their true identity and self-worth and feeling of who they are from Christ and not from success of what others think or say about them. PRAY!!

Missionaries must remember the meaning of being a missionary

The mission for all of us is to do the will of Christ and not our own. We are God’s instruments to be used as He sees fit.  PRAY that our missionaries will have the humility of Christ as described in Philippians 2:5-8.

Missionaries need sharpened insights

PRAY that our missionaries will have a heightened sympathy and insight into the needs of those around them.  PRAY that the Lord would give them the wisdom as to what duties they should undertake in their ministry and how the Lord would have them go about the details of these duties.

Missionary children

PRAY for the health of our missionary children.  PRAY that missionaries will have God’s wisdom in providing for the education of their children.  PRAY that both parents will be godly role models.

Share the Missionary’s burden for additional workers, both national and foreign

There is a desperate need for more coworkers to gather in the harvest and disciple those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior.  PRAY!!

How do we Pray for Missionaries?

  • Be specific.
  • Agree in prayer with others. Matthew 18:19-20.
  • Pray as for yourself. Any problems you have, the missionary may have, but it will often be magnified by circumstances on the field.
  • Pray with the authority you have in Christ, and bind the strong man. Mark 3:27.
  • Try using passages of scripture when you are praying for your missionary, such as Ephesians 3:1-21, Colossians 1:9-14.
